crash involving a bicyclist or pedestrian is a tragic and emotional
event. It is important that all of the factors and issues that influenced
the event are discovered and verbalized when trying to establish
fault and liability.
Kirby Beck was a street cop for 28 years, investigating hundreds
of motor vehicle crashes, many involving bicycles and pedestrians.
An experienced police bike patrol officer, Beck is an internationally
recognized bike patrol instructor and instructor-trainer. He was
certified in 1988 as League of American Bicyclists Effective Cyclist
Instructor #183. Mr. Beck is an expert in issues involving: proper
and legal riding techniques, bike/pedestrian legal issues and pertinent
statutes, common crash types, nighttime and conspicuity issues,
and common cycling hazards.
Kirby is a training consultant and served as the lead law enforcement
instructor in the 3-day National Highway Institute (NHI) course
entitled Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety and Accommodation, which
was sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
